Smith, Gambrell & Russell Partner Roger Juan Maldonado Appointed to New Commission to Develop Comprehensive Vision for the NY Court System

ATLANTA (June 25, 2020) – Smith, Gambrell & Russell, LLP (SGR) is pleased to announce that New York Partner Roger Juan Maldonado has been appointed by State of New York Chief Judge Janet DiFiore to a new commission, Commission to Reimagine the Future of New York’s Courts, charged with examining the enhanced use of technology and online platforms, among other innovations, and making recommendations to improve the delivery and quality of justice services, facilitate access to justice and better equip the New York State court system to keep pace with society’s rapidly evolving changes.

As immediate past president of the New York City Bar Association, Mr. Maldonado is among the Commission’s distinguished group of judges, lawyers, academics and technology experts charged with exploring regulatory, structural, technological and other innovations, providing short-term recommendations as the courts resume in-person operations while developing a blueprint for the court system of tomorrow. To this end, the Commission will obtain widespread input through public comment, targeted outreach and the views of experts, proposing practical reforms that may be implemented by the Court System or Legislature.

Mr. Maldonado was elected as the 68th president of the New York City Bar serving from May 2018 until May 2020 and was the organization’s first Hispanic president. A Partner in SGR’s New York Litigation Practice, he has a nearly 40-year legal career as a trial lawyer and commercial litigator, representing musicians, publishers, and record labels in litigation to enforce their copyrights and contractual rights. In addition, Mr. Maldonado assists corporate and commercial institutions in litigation involving claims arising from software development/license disputes, lease agreements, and contract disputes. Fluent in Spanish, he represents the interests of various Hispanic and American businesses, government entities and individuals, and to investigate allegations of corporate wrongdoing and discriminatory employment practices. Mr. Maldonado is also the former chair of the City Bar’s Task Force on Puerto Rico and a native of Puerto Rico.
