ATLANTA (March 17, 2022) – Smith Gambrell & Russell, LLP (SGR) is pleased to announce the unveiling of the commissioned portrait of New York Partner Roger Juan Maldonado to honor his service as the 68th president of the New York City Bar Association (City Bar) from May 2018 until May 2020. A native of Puerto Rico, Mr. Maldonado was the City Bar’s first Hispanic president, and his portrait was painted by Carlos Castano, an award-winning Hispanic artist who has exhibited extensively in the New York area. The portrait was unveiled following the special medal presentation ceremony of the “Award of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York to Zachary W. Carter and Mary Jo White on March 10, 2022. Mr. Maldonado’s portrait, which is a customary honor for former presidents of the City Bar, now hangs in the Reception Area of the House of the Association.

A Partner in SGR’s New York Litigation Practice, Mr. Maldonado has a nearly 40-year legal career as a trial lawyer and commercial litigator. He has represented, counseled and advised businesspeople, in-house counsel, governmental entities and others in the resolution of complex matters. In so doing, Mr. Maldonado gives his clients his best judgment – based on his experience in litigations, trials, appeals, arbitrations, mediations and negotiated settlements – on how to arrive at the best possible result.

Mr. Maldonado is an enthusiastic supporter of the City Bar and its programs. In 2021, he was honored during the New York City Bar’s 15th Lawyer Assistance Committee Volunteer Appreciation Celebration for his work with the Lawyer Assistance Program (LAP), which helps lawyers with alcohol/substance use issues, depression and mental health disorders, stress and other challenges. Prior to his presidency, he was the chair of the City Bar’s Task Force on Puerto Rico supporting its core mission to monitor Puerto Rico’s current fiscal crisis.
