ATLANTA (June 2, 2022) – Smith, Gambrell & Russell, LLP (SGR) is pleased to announce that Partner Kathryn Zickert has been honored with a 2022 Leading the Charge Award from the DeKalb Volunteer Lawyers Foundation (DVLF), a nonprofit that serves the civil legal needs of low income residents of DeKalb County, Georgia. The award was presented on June 1 during the Leading the Charge Awards Luncheon which celebrated DVLF’s 40 years of service, recognized the attorneys who volunteer their legal services though DVLF, and honored the judiciary who have been integral to DVLF’s work. Ms. Zickert founded DVLF in 1982 and served as its executive director for 10 years.
During its 40-year history, DVLF has assisted more than 10,000 clients with their civil legal problems. More than 1000 attorneys have served on the panel of volunteer lawyers to provide assistance in areas such as bankruptcy, domestic relations, general litigation, landlord/tenant, and wills and estates.
Kathy Zickert is a partner in and the leader of SGR’s Zoning, Planning and Land Use Practice where she practices in all aspects of land use and zoning. She is the author of a number of zoning and other land use ordinances used throughout Georgia. Ms. Zickert is a member of Legal Action Network for Development Strategies (LANDS), a national group of zoning and land use lawyers who represent only private property interests. Additionally, she is a regular speaker at national and local land use seminars sponsored by the Atlanta Regional Commission, the National Business Institute, Law Seminars International, Lorman, the Georgia Institute for Continuing Legal Education, the National Association of Homebuilders, the American and Georgia Planning Associations, and the American Bar Association. Ms. Zickert has served as an adjunct professor for Emory University School of Law, teaching advanced litigation courses, and as a DeKalb County Magistrate. She has also served as a Board Member for the Metropolitan Atlanta Transit Authority (MARTA) and currently serves on the Board of the Georgia Regional Transportation Authority.
