James B. Porter is a Partner in the Real Estate Practice Group of Smith, Gambrell & Russell, LLP.
Mr. Porter practices in the area of commercial real estate and general business law, with significant experience in multi-family and medical office acquisitions and dispositions, commercial office and retail leasing, shopping center development, financing transactions, distressed debt resolutions, condominium regimes, property management and title insurance. Mr. Porter also has significant experience in the purchase, sale and financing of agricultural, retail, office and auto dealership properties.
Mr. Porter has served as Florida counsel to a number of national and regional banks in their mortgage lending activities. He has been recognized by The Best Lawyers in America (2013-2015, 2017, and 2019-2022). Prior to joining Smith Gambrell, Mr. Porter practiced commercial real estate law at Fowler White Boggs, P.A. and Foley & Larder, and has also worked as in-house counsel for Winn-Dixie Stores, Inc. and a privately held real estate investment company.
Mr. Porter served in the United States Navy from 1987 – 1993 and received his B.A. in Economics, summa cum laude, from the University of North Florida in 1996. He earned his J.D., magna cum laude, from Washington and Lee University School of Law in 1999, where he was a contributor to the school’s Law Review and served as a Burks Scholar. Mr. Porter is admitted to practice in Florida.
