Dr. Judy de León Jarecki-Black is a Partner in the Intellectual Property Practice of Smith, Gambrell & Russell, LLP.
Dr. Judy de León Jarecki-Black is an experienced Intellectual Property attorney with over twenty years of experience, including in both private and corporate practice. As the Global Head of Intellectual Property for Merial Limited (now Boehringer-Ingelheim Animal Health), for 18 years, she headed a global IP department responsible for developing and implementing a global patent strategy as well as conducting patent prosecution and patent litigation activities both in the US and other countries. Under her leadership, Merial maintained its patent portfolio against both infringement and validity challenges for FRONTLINE PLUS ®, the only Animal Health product to reach over 1 billion USD a year in sales.
Dr. Jarecki-Black received both a B.S. in Biology and a B.A. in History, with Honors, from the College of Charleston, and was graduated Magna Cum Laude. Her honors thesis was entitled “The Effect of the Black Death on European History”. She attended medical school and received a Ph.D. in Molecular and Cellular Biology & Pathobiology from the Medical University of South Carolina and worked developing human and animal vaccines against infectious diseases, including the recombinant Lyme (OspA) vaccine. Developing a commercial vaccine stimulated her interest in patent law, and she received a Juris Doctorate from Georgia State University College of Law. Dr. Jarecki-Black is admitted to practice before the US Patent and Trademark Office as well as state courts in South Carolina and Georgia. Further, she is admitted to several federal courts, including the United States Supreme Court.
Dr. Jarecki-Black has authored twenty-four peer-reviewed publications and over 80 abstracts and presentations. She has received a number of honors, including 2022’s Feather in Her Cap award in Animal Health; Chief Patent Counsel of the Year for Intellectual Property (ILO Global Counsel Awards); Intellectual Property Community Service Award (GSU College of Law, Atlanta Bar Association, and State Bar of Georgia), and the Pro Bono Award for community service (Atlanta Inn of Court).
