ATLANTA (May 16, 2018) – Smith, Gambrell & Russell, LLP (SGR) is pleased to announce that Partner Roger Juan Maldonado has been elected as the 68th president of the New York City Bar Association (City Bar). The presidential election was held during the City Bar’s annual meeting on May 15, 2018, along with the elections of the new officers and members of the Executive Committee.
“I am honored to have been elected as president of the City Bar,” said Mr. Maldonado. “And it will be my priority to continue the City Bar’s work to ensure the protection of the interests of the vulnerable and to preserve the basic rights of all, not only the rights of those fortunate to have the independent means to access the courts and petition government.”
Most recently, Mr. Maldonado was Chair of the City Bar’s Task Force on Puerto Rico, which was formed in 2016. In his new role as the City Bar’s president, he will continue to support the task force’s core mission to monitor Puerto Rico’s current fiscal crisis. Mr. Maldonado has also served the City Bar as a Vice President and member of the Executive Committee, and as Chair of the Council on Judicial Administration, the Task Force on International Legal Services, the Task Force on Housing Court, and the Housing Court Committee.
As a Partner in SGR’s Litigation Practice, Mr. Maldonado has a 35-year legal career as a trial lawyer and commercial litigator. He represents musicians, publishers, and record labels in litigation to enforce their copyrights and contractual rights. In addition, Mr. Maldonado assists corporate and commercial institutions in litigation involving claims arising from software development/license disputes, lease agreements, and contract disputes. Fluent in Spanish, he represents the interests of various Hispanic and American businesses, government entities and individuals, and to investigate allegations of corporate wrongdoing and discriminatory employment practices.
Mr. Maldonado is a Referee for the New York State Commission on Judicial Conduct and is a member of the Commercial Division Advisory Council, the Advisory Group of New York State and Federal Judicial Council, and the Board of Directors of the New York Bar Foundation. He is a former member of the Department Disciplinary Committee, Supreme Court, Appellate Division, First Department; former Co-Chair of the Committee on Non-Lawyers and the Justice Gap; and has served on the Mayor’s Advisory Committee on the Judiciary.
